CHAPTER 9

LET THE LORD HAVE MERCY ON US ALL.

*THIRD POV*

Jason was sitting on the sofa watching a football match when he heard his friends shouting and coming out from the kitchen. Anand was mumbling something about always a liar while Seb threw a juice bottle at him but he caught both the words and the bottle effortlessly.

“I swear you have ears of a wolf!”, exclaimed Anand.

“Well, what can I say, it’s a gift. Now, who was lying?”.

“Who other than our best friend Noah. When Seb and I asked whether he likes that new girl Jessica, he refused. But then when Seb asked for her number, he got territorial and refused to give.”.

“Dude! From the way you two were texting all night I had say you two would be madly in love within couple months.”, said Jason standing up and walked toward the door to attend his now ringing phone.

Jason could hear, ‘I told you so!’ and ‘No freaking way!’ in the background.

He went to the porch and spoke on his phone and after completing his call, he saw all the four girls from the neighbouring house getting on the car and driving away.

His mind started working. Early morning. All four them, in a car. He knew in that instant they were headed to the mall.

He smiled to himself and headed inside his house.

*RANINA POV CONTINUES*

It was a warm sunny day. The sun smiled upon us kissing our skins ever so lightly. The winds gushed past us whispering gossip tales. And under the clear bright sky, we laid, soaking up all the warmth. “There you girls are! I have been searching for you four since forever!”, complaining, my brother joined us too.

“Always the drama queen, Nate. We just left you half hour ago.”, replied my friend Reshma.

“So what? Hey Ray, are you ready for shoe shopping? I have been wanting to buy this cute shoes, wanna come with me?”, asked my brother.

What the hell!! My brother want to buy cute shoes?!?!What dimension am I living in?!!

“Ray! I’m gonna kill you now!!! Snap out of your day-dreaming mode this instant!”,someone shouted in my ears.

“Gahhh. My poor ears!”, I said covering them.

“I have been talking to you for the past 5 minutes ‘bout the new shoes I want to buy and you were day-dreaming!!!”, said an angry Jessica.

“Oh thank god, it was you talking then. I thought it was him.”, I replied swiping my forehand with the backside of my hand.

“Him who?”, enquired Reshma.

“I thought it was Nate speaking.”

All my friends broke out laughing. Even Jhansi who was driving hit the brake suddenly to laugh.

“Your – your brother – and cute shoes?!?”, said Reshma and broke out laughing. Again.

You would have known that I tend to day-dream. A lot. And my friends always wait for those moments like vulture to embarrass me whenever and wherever possible.

“Okay, Okay. Enough. We are here.”

The parking was almost full and we had to walk back a long way to reach the entrance of the mall. The mall was ginormous but also beautiful. The whole mall was decorated in Pirates of the Carribean  theme and there were people dressed as pirates welcoming us.

There were many small stores in that 5 storey mall and it took us all a long time to reach the shoe shop that Jessica wanted to go to.

And the scene that greeted us there was :
Two young girls of our age were fighting over a shoe with the salesman.

A group of ladies shouting at each other surrounding the high heels section.

A silent cold war going on between 2 friends to decide who should buy that single super-cute pair of pink shoes.

A group of little girls grabbing each other’s hair and trying to scold each other in words that were too big for them to pronounce.

A group of moms of the above said girl group, mimicking their daughters , minus the hair grabbing but swearing at each other with words their daughters cannot speak.
The sales girls scattered around all over their shop not knowing how to control the chaos and they were shouting among themselves in the noise.

The four of us saw this scene.

Three of us took two steps backwards.

Only one took a step forward, her eyes scanning through the shoe racks and then her eyes narrowed on one pair of green shoes.

Let the lord have mercy on us all. All I could say is that a devil is out in the form of Jessica Smith and that she is ready to face any battle to win that shoe.
